Google Health recently encouraged people to upload and store important health documents online. However, there are problems with this partial solution.
First, each state has different requirements regarding such documents like advanced directives and while general advanced directives will do in a pinch, state specific documents are the best way to secure that your wishes will be carried…

I have been advocating for years that everyone needs to have more of their important documents uploaded to a secure online storage site. Your health records, insurance and financial documents, and legal documents (like living wills, DNR orders, power of attorney, etc...).
However, accompanied by all of these is usually a password and if you are really suave then you might have a file or a program that contains all of your passwords -- but does anyone else have access to them if something should…

Respite care services can be an incredible resource for many full time carehelpers. Even just a few hours a week can make a huge difference for you emotionally. Most carehelpers I speak with, however, feel like like they can never let their guard down or may even feel guilty about dropping Mom or Dad off with a program for the afternoon. Yet, even though, taking care of a loved one is one of the most rewarding things we can do on earth, it can also be very stressful. Remember that if you let you…

Birmingham Business Journal recently reported on a study that found that Facebook is growing among popularity with people 55 years and older. The internet is changing the way society communicates and older people are learning what kids take for granted in this high tech age: you can use online social networking media sites to connect with family, old friends or even make new ones more…

Each year, many older Americans are injured in and around their homes. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that in 2002, over 1.45 million people over age 65 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with products they live with and use everyday (
see article here).
CPSC believes that many of these injuries result from hazards that are easy to overlook, but also easy to fix. By sp…

Well, it's official. Time here is 12:30 am on Mother's Day 2009. I didn't think Mom would still be with us for this day, but there she sits, in front of me on the beside comode. She's been there for about an hour now and yep I a tired. Today my daughter sent me a beautiful vase of roses and in just a bit I am going to bring half of them to my mom's room for her. As much as she loves roses, I really don't know if they will bring her much joy. She can't seem to find much to smile about these days…

PUT YOUR CAR KEYS BESIDE YOUR BED AT NIGHT
Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your Parents, your Dr.'s Office, the check out girl at the market,
Everyone you run across.
Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside Your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car.
The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery
Dies. This tip came from a neighborhood…

My mother was diagnosed with Senile Dementia in 1985 that started a 12 year saga of caring for my mom and then my wife's mom. It was hard on everyone in the story but by God's grace we got through it. Three years ago I started putting into print the contents of a talk I give on "Honoring Your Parents". The book is now published and can be ordered at www.wisdomhunters.com. or by emailiing me at Gayle.Jackson@portalt.com. The theme of the book is what does honor mean in the bible and what does it…

I have been facilitating Caregiver Support Groups for 5+ years and each time I finish one, no matter how bad a person felt coming in, they always feel so much better going out. There is nothing like sharing life stories with other people that have either gone through what you have gone through or are experiencing for the first time something you have dealt with. Those caregivers who have had hands on experience with the various family issues which arise while caregiving can make for the best sou…

You tell me. Mid to late baby boomers are feeling it. Even some on the boomer fringe.
Aging parents. How do we cope? And, do we want to read about it? They're intrusive. They encroach on our precious baby boomer time. They move us from the centers of our universe begrudgingly to the center of theirs.
We don't like that much.
We're all about peace, love and understanding but we're cantankerous in their presence. Sure, they are too. But, hell, they're old. They ache. Their freedom is caving in…

I spent the evening listening to my aunt and my mother talk about the oddity of what we will call a "blue Sunday" This is the phenomenon that they have experienced since their spouses have died in the past year. Apparently, this day, more than any other day in the week, has a greater likelihood of bringing the sadness. I am wondering if this is a universal truth and what you all think contributes to this experience.

July 29, 2008 First Blog:
It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years since Jack (my sweet Daddy) died! This has been an interesting and difficult journey which has been saddened even more by our (almost) 94 year old Mother's progression with Alzheimer's Disease - appropriately called "The Long Goodbye".
Mother had been in Assisted Living for the last 8 years, but that no longer met her needs as her sciatic nerve attacks and "forgetfulness" worsened. Last December, after a particularly bad…
