Why CaringSource?

CaringSource was created because during my Ph.D. process in Gerontology, I noticed an educational gap in our society between the "experts" and the carehelpers. My Mother, who is the primary carehelper to my 97 year old Grandmother would call me and ask me questions about where to look for care tips, how to find good resources, how to plan for future caregiving needs, and sometimes just talk. I was able to point her in the right direction many times. I gave her the Five Most Important Tasks for Carehelpers, but as we spoke, I realized she was giving me a ton of information too. So while I was getting my Ph.D. in Gerontology, she was becoming an expert in providing care to her Mother. We can learn much from each other. So feel free to share your experiences and tell us what you have learned.

My passion is helping people. If you need assistance, feel free to contact me for a Personalized Care Plan at bryanford@caringsource.com
or for a FREE quote.

GSA Ripples Newsletter: A Great Resource!

The Gerontological Society of America has many publications that are both informative and useful. One of the best is the Ripples newsletter. "Ripples is an e-newsletter designed to keep interested deans and directors, faculty members, students, practitioners and others informed about the work of the Geriatric Social Work… Continue

Google Health: Only a partial solution.

Google Health recently encouraged people to upload and store important health documents online. However, there are problems with this partial solution.

First, each state has different requirements regarding such documents like advanced directives and while general advanced directives will do in a pinch, state specific documents are the best way to secure that your wishes will… Continue

WSJ: You Need an Online Estate Plan

I have been advocating for years that everyone needs to have more of their important documents uploaded to a secure online storage site. Your health records, insurance and financial documents, and legal documents (like living wills, DNR orders, power of attorney, etc...).

However, accompanied by all of these is usually a password and if you are really suave then you might have a file or a program that contains all of your passwords -- but does anyone else have access to them if… Continue

Respite Care Services

Respite care services can be an incredible resource for many full time carehelpers. Even just a few hours a week can make a huge difference for you emotionally. Most carehelpers I speak with, however, feel like like they can never let their guard down or may even feel guilty about dropping Mom or Dad off with a program for the afternoon. Yet, even though, taking care of a loved one is one of the most rewarding things we can do on earth, it can also be very stressful. Remember that if you let… Continue

Social Networking Media... It's not just for kids anymore.

Birmingham Business Journal recently reported on a study that found that Facebook is growing among popularity with people 55 years and older. The internet is changing the way society communicates and older people are learning what kids take for granted in this high tech age: you can use online social networking media sites to connect with family, old friends or even make new ones… Continue

So glad you made it here. I hope this will give a clear picture of the potential of a social networking and exhaustive resource site. It's getting there... We can work with the members here as to see how it works, getting resources together. We can collect FAQ's, etc. from them.

Thank you for writing and encouraging me. I think this type of website is a wonderful tool. I only wish I had found something like this five years ago when I was totally lost and in need of many answers. No looking back, looking forward is always a better decision. I am so grateful for everyone's input ad I have learned from others/ Thanks again. God bless.
