Solutions for Successful Aging

Too many times have I come across patients so desperately in need of hospice and when the word "Hospice" is brought up, they immediately panic. 15 years ago, being on Hospice meant death in days or weeks. Through the years, Hospice has evolved into a wonderful service that has allows us to reach patients and their families before they are in crisis. Although the qualifications for hospice do require a terminal diagnosis with no further aggressive treatment, hospices are now helping educate doctors to identify patients early and allow us to bond with the family and prepare them for the road ahead. I always tell my families that 98% of my job is education. Our goal is to give them a ground to stand on and prepare them with the tools, support and knowledge they need so that when they are in the most difficult moments, they are prepared. When people know what to expect, and how much hospice can provide comfort and quality of life, it eases the anxiety of the unknown. Hospice provides support to patients and their families not only medically but spiritually and socially. No longer is Hospice the "H" word, it is something that stands for dignity, quality of life, and empowering patients and their families when dealing with end of life issues.

I now see Hospice as the "HELP" word when we are so desperately needing it. I am the caregiver for my mother and when I did not know what to do, what to expect, or physically wonder how I was going to do what was necessary to take care of my mother, Hospice was with me providing assistance, love and care. I am so appreciative for everything that I have learned during this time and I will always love those who came to my rescue each and every time that I needed them. The word Hospice now means something totally different than when I was someone who was not in need of this service, meaning, the time before my mom became ill. Now, I can truly tell others exactly what the "H" word means. Heavenly Help.
Great explanation. Many of my clients are confused by hospice. Even many professionals seems confused by modern day hospice. I would like to use this explanation with them. Thank you.
Hospice has been an invaluable benefit for my Mother and for our family. It took away nothing and gave the added benifits that make Mother's life (and our's) much better. Even though she is in a skilled care facility (that decision was the most gut wretching!) Hospice adds "eyes" and widsom and oversight to her care - relieving us of much stress!! So, if I may add to the ongoing definition, Hospice is not only Heavenly Help...but provides a way of Healing in a Healthy way for families to make decisions and have the support and advice needed to do so. As a result, the patient gets the best care they deserve through a very difficult part of life.
