Don't know how I ever got along without Hospice! I was one of those who thought it meant "eminent death". Instead...it is assisting us in our journey as well as bring Mother the comfort, consistency and stability she needed.

i have also seen hospice in action and it is truly humbling. to have someone(s) serve your family in a time like that, in such an honoring way will leave you speechless and feeling so loved. And when, more than at the end of a life that you have held dear, do you need to feel loved and cared for. Hospice is the most gracious thing in those situations where it is allowed to minister to families and patients. Those who are able to put themselves in place to usher people from this earth astound me with their capacity to see outside themselves. I am so grateful for the peace it brings, to know such a thing as hospice exists.

Had a meeting with Director of Nursing the other day who oversees dementia facility my mother is in. Mother is really "stabilizing" in the unit - for the first time in a year! Now they want me to stop Hospice because they say they can manage her pain and the Hospice philosophy of "eminent death" is opposed to their progressive philosophy of helping Alzheimer's improve or somewhat stabilize through environment. Wish nursing homes could get re-educated on all Hospice really does!

I never stop being suprised by people seeing Hospice as "having the philosophy of "eminent death"'. Pain management is one of the specialties of hospice and the the number one purpose of hospice is to manage people's pain long before they are eminent. On a different note, I will also add that Alzhiemers/Dementia is one of the hardest diagnoses to re-certify since it can so many times become "chronic". Many pts start to stable out and/or thrive when Hospice comes in simply because so many needs are attended to so quickly and symptoms become properly managed.
